My paintings are my own voice and version of my history. Everyone has struggles with their origins, no matter what social or economic background one comes from. These works focus on the idea that my early life and upbringing affected my path in adulthood and still affects me to this day. I use my childhood home and imagery from my life to communicate my ideas and emotions towards the subjects of my paintings.
Color plays a role in highlighting significant areas or affecting the overall mood. From the dull green of a morose, fluorescently lit basement to the tranquil blue bedroom in the house where I grew up, I use color to create feelings.
Though I reference real spaces, my compositions omit and isolate information to highlight my opinions and views.
The paint itself is thin and only concentrated in areas that are the focus, and is applied directly with few layers. Within these objects and the application I personify the image and, in many instances, project myself into the object whether it be an inanimate chair, another person, or a space. With these introspective portraits I investigate how I became who I am through my family and my own personal experiences.
